How to Choose Best Sunglasses

A helping hand when buying sunglasses

Is it time to invest in a new pair of shades? Whether you’re looking for some for your next big business trip, want to get ready for hitting the beach or have a special outdoor event coming up, now is the perfect time to think about designer sunglasses.

From our decade working in the industry, we have found that the huge choice in sunglasses can often be overwhelming for shoppers (even when you think
you know what you want.) The array of colours, shapes, sizes and brands, even the most decisive person may struggle to find ones to suit them.

But don’t worry, we have put together a handy sunglasses buying guide to help.

Using questions we have answered for customers in the past and our experience in the industry, we have put together this handy buying guide to help you choose the perfect pair.

Style

Of course, one of the most important things to buyers when shopping for new sunglasses is their appearance and style. There are lots of trendy designs out there from traditional square frames and elegant aviators to unique ombre lenses and cat-eye designs that make a statement. We would advise trying out a few different pairs with our TryMe feature as this will give you an idea of how they will look. You may also want to read our face shape guide for handy information about different shapes and the sunglasses they suit.

Skin Tone

Skin tone is another important thing to consider as although there are plenty of colour options, they won’t all suit you.

The colour of your sunglasses needs to match and compliment your complexion and as a general rule:

Cool skin tones usually have skin that sunburns easily, have blue, green or grey eyes and veins that appear blue. This skin tone goes well with frames that are silver, blue, green, purple or pink combined with lenses in blue, pink or silver.

Warm tones is skin with a tanned glow, paired with brown or black eyes and veins that look green rather than blue. The perfect sunglasses for this tone are frames which are red, yellow, orange, beige, golden or brown with lenses that are fiery and really stand out.

Eyewear technology to consider

As well as your sunglasses looking the part, it’s also important to think about the features they have too. The premium brands we work with are continuing to develop technologically advanced eyewear that benefits your eyes.

This includes polarised lenses which are specially designed to reduce glare by only allowing vertically angled light into your vision. They are also designed to improve visual clarity, comfort and colour contrast, making it an extremely popular choice.

These lenses are particularly beneficial to those with eye conditions that make them more sensitive to light such as cataracts, AMD (age-related macular degeneration) and eye inflammation like uveitis. Drivers, especially those doing long or regular journeys, often choose this type of lens as it decreases eye strain and prevents you from being blinded by light unexpectedly.

Photochromic lenses, also known as transition lenses, are another type to look out for. These lenses are specially designed to become darker when exposed to UV rays and sunlight, and become clearer when you are indoors or if the weather is cloudy or dull.

This is ideal (and cost-effective!) if you only want to eliminate the need to buy two pairs of prescription sunglasses, instead you have everything you need rolled into one.

And of course, last but not least is UV protection. This is possibly the most important thing to look out for when choosing your next pair of sunglasses. Having 100% UVA and UVB protection is a guaranteed way of shielding your eyes from harmful rays that could otherwise cause a sunburn-like condition called photokeratitis as well as other conditions like cataracts, pinguecula and pterygium, and macular degeneration.

There are many other additional eyewear features that you may want to consider, such as being water repellant, scratch resistant and mirrored lenses. It will be worthwhile assessing what you need before you browse as you are guaranteed to get exactly what you want and need.

Don’t forget that this is an investment and premium sunglasses are designed to last as well as impress. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our customer service team and we’d be happy to help!
