Time to dig your sunglasses out? Or maybe you’ve just invested in a pair and want to keep them in the very best shape?
Over time, it’s inevitable that your sunglasses will get dirty. This happens partly because of the environment, for example taking them on holiday where there is more wind and sandy beaches, or simply because you wear them a lot.
How often you need to clean your shades will differ depending on a number of factors, including the type of activities you wear them for (such as sunbathing, mountain climbing, skiing) and whether they have been worn in harsh weather conditions like wind, rain or snow.
How To Clean Your Sunglasses
Here are some tips for cleaning sunglasses and advice for how to keep them looking their best.
Rinse
Begin by rinsing your sunglasses under lukewarm water. This will help to remove any loose dirt and debris, as well as those annoying specks of dust!
Soap and water
Use a mild soap, like fairy liquid or hand soap, and mix with water to create lots of bubbly suds. After this, gently rub this solution over the lenses, frames and nose pads with your fingers or a soft cloth.
Rinse again
After washing, rinse the sunglasses under lukewarm water to remove all of the soap residue.Don’t try to save time when you get to this part, you will need to do it thoroughly to ensure no smears or marks are left behind.
Dry
With a clean, soft cloth, gently pat the sunglasses dry. You will need to avoid using rough or abrasive materials like lint as these could scratch and damage the lenses.
Polish
If your sunglasses have plastic or glass lenses, you can use a microfiber cloth specifically designed for cleaning lenses to polish them. This helps to remove any remaining smudges or streaks.
Storage
Store your sunglasses in a protective case when you’re not wearing them to keep them safe and secure. Designer sunglasses from Genuine Style come with a protective case/bag so you can take them out anywhere without having to worry.
Top tip – Remember, never use harsh chemicals or abrasives to clean your sunglasses, as they can damage the lenses and coatings. Also, avoid wiping your sunglasses with your clothing, as it may contain dirt or debris that could scratch the lenses.
Cleaning Sunglasses – A Checklist
We have also put together a handy checklist for cleaning your designer sunglasses.
- Be sure to use liquid (even if it’s just water) to clean them properly, as wiping them with a dry cloth, sleeves or paper material is likely to scratch and/or leave marks.
- Don’t use water that is too hot as this will damage the coating on the lens. We also would recommend using water that is cold (unless it’s a solution or wipe) as it won’t remove all of the dirt, oil or dust effectively.
- Try to avoid breathing on your sunglasses while cleaning them as this will make the lenses steam up without actually cleaning the surface.
- When you’re heading to the beach, take some glasses wipes with you. Rubbing sand off without being extra careful can scratch the lens surface and reduce visual clarity.
- Add cleaning your sunglasses to your regular eyecare routine. Don’t leave them until they get really dirty as this will be much harder to do!
