10 Common Mistakes When Buying Sunglasses

10 Common Mistakes When Buying Sunglasses

Summer is well on the way and hopefully we get some warmer, sunnier weather very soon. This means that now is the perfect time to replace or upgrade your shades!

Whether you’re looking for traditional and elegant frames or something a little bit more fun and quirky, Genuine Style has the very best sunglasses to suit your wardrobe.

Not sure where to start? Check out mistakes to avoid when it comes to shopping for your next pair of designer sunglasses.

1 – Ignoring UV protection

Many people focus solely on style and overlook the importance of UV protection. However, it’s important to ensure your sunglasses offer 100% UV protection to shield your eyes from harmful UV rays.

Without this, the sun can cause damage to the corneas and macular degeneration which can lead to impaired of vision, as well as pigmentation and wrinkles on the surrounding skin.

2 – Choosing fashion over function

While style is important, functionality is equally as important and if you invest in quality, your new shades will last much longer. Be sure to choose sunglasses that provide adequate coverage and are made from dependable, high quality materials.

3 – Opting for the incorrect lens colour

Did you know that different lens colours serve different purposes? For example, grey lenses provide true colour perception, while amber lenses are known to enhance contrast.

Choose the right lens colour based on your needs as what you wear for driving or on holiday will need to be different to that of playing sports or fitness activities.

4 – Not considering frame size and shape

Designer sunglasses should complement your face shape and fit comfortably. Avoid frames that are too large or small for your face, as they may not provide proper protection or look flattering.

Take a look at our face shape guide to help find out your face shape here.

5 – Missing out polarisation

Polarised lenses reduce glare from reflective surfaces like water and snow, improving visibility and reducing eye strain. This feature is a must-have especially if you enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, running and skiing.

6 – Overlooking lens quality

Cheaper sunglasses may have lower-grade lenses that distort vision or scratch easily. It’s essential to invest in sunglasses with superior quality lenses for better visual clarity, durability and longevity.

7 – Ignoring lens material

Different lens materials offer various benefits. For instance, polycarbonate lenses are lightweight and impact-resistant, making them ideal for sports, while glass lenses provide superior optical clarity.

The best lens for you will depend on many factors, including type of wear (e.g sports or fashion), length of wear and whether they need to be worn for long periods/in challenging weather conditions.

8 – Not checking for authenticity

It’s really important to purchase sunglasses from reputable retailers to ensure authenticity. Genuine Style is an official stockist of many reputable designer brands and have a 4.9* rating on Trustpilot. Every order also comes with the branded case and cloth to give you extra assurance.

9 – Forgetting about lens coatings

Anti-reflective coatings reduce glare and improve visibility, while hydrophobic coatings repel water and prevent smudges. Consider sunglasses with these coatings for enhanced performance and durability.

10 – Buying the cheapest

It can be tempting to base your purchasing decision on how cheap something is. You may be able to find them on your local market or high street store, but these really aren’t worth it when it comes to quality and UV protection.

Because these shades are made with such low quality materials, it makes them easy to break and damage, and won’t last anywhere near as long as a premium pair. If you want them to be a long term investment, rather than having to replace them every month then we really recommend taking a look at the luxury, superior quality options available at Genuine Style.

In summary

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can rest assured that your shades not only look stylish but also provide adequate protection and functionality for your eyes.
